This machine is a fully-automatic expresso machine with some super-automatic features of grinding a pre-measure of beans for your brew. Note, the Breville Bes860XL is not a super-automatic machine, and you still need to manually mount the portafilter into the group head, and clean the filter afterwards. My experience with Breville Barista Express has been mostly positive. I’m especially impressed by how easy this machine is to make a delicious-tasting cappuccino!

Now we currently have more than 70 semi-automatic machines to choose from at www.amazon.com. And there are many coffee geeks do extensive testing and note their reviews on all of them. So we can take all that data and put different espresso machines together to compare. On the Amazon, it has a great filter allowing you to create side-by-side comparisons of more than 30 features and data points for every espresso machine it sells. Of course, I will tell you more about the best Semi Automatic Espresso Machine Reviews really makes – well, comparing machines easy. Anyway, here’s a basic breakdown of the types of semi-automatic machines in broad categories.

Semi Automatic Espresso Machine

So as we move down the chart we’re going up in capabilities, features and price right.

For simplicity and low-cost, we begin with a single boiler machine with a pressurized portafilter. Using a pressurized portafilter takes two critical elements of brewing espresso – the grind and tamp,  for the most part, out of the equation. This makes it easy to produce espresso as the pressurized portafilter doesn’t allow release of espresso until the proper pressure is reached. For really easy espresso machines like the Saeco Aroma, Gaggia Classic, and Gaggia Baby Twin here come with adapters for pod brewing. Pods aren’t for everyone, but they sure are clean and convenient. Just put a pre-measured pod in the adapted portafilter, brew. And when you’re done, there’s no messy grinds to deal with…just the spent pod. So when you brew in a standard basket it’s the coffee that creates pressure based on your grind and tamp. A pressurized basket simplifies everything. Of course, the tradeoff is the user gives up most of the ability finesse the quality in any way.

Breville Dual Boiler Semi Automatic Espresso MachineThe next step up on our list are single boiler machines with a 3 way solenoid valve. The 3 way valve improves reliability and performance. It’s an electrically operated, positively sealing valve much less likely to leak than spring operated valves on lower cost machines. Yes, a nice thing with these machines is they usually come with both pressurized and non-pressurized filter baskets. So, the machine can grow with your experience. Be aware when brewing in a standard non-pressurized basket a quality grinder is essential. So with a machine like this Gaggia Classic, You can get into espresso without a good grinder and then move up to really finessing your espresso through variations in grinding and tamping when you’re ready to invest in a quality grinder. On the machines we’ve looked at so far, there’s just one boiler. With these there’s always a wait of about 15 – 30 seconds between brewing and steaming as the boiler gets up to steam temp. You’ll also need to cool down the boiler after steaming before brewing again.

In our next class, dual boiler consumer machines, that waiting goes away while retaining the benefits of a 3 way solenoid valve. And, some machines like the Gaggia Baby Twin come with both pressurized and standard baskets allowing you to grow your skills on one machine. So this class of machine adds a second boiler dedicated to steaming – practically eliminating any waiting between brewing and steaming. It also eliminates cooling down a boiler after steaming before brewing again.

Gaggia 12500 Baby Twin Espresso MachineOur next basic class is heat exchange machines.Sometimes referred to as “HX” machines. These machines have a single boiler but with a heat exchange system within the boiler. So inside the steam boiler is a tube in which water for brewing is heated while the boiler is producing steam. With a heat exchange boiler, you can brew and steam at the same time. On machines with heat exchange boilers, we also start to see most of them using the “famed” E61 brew group which is generally a standard throughout all higher end semi-automatic machines. Now the E61 is special because it uses a thermo-siphon which constantly circulates hot water from the boiler through the brew group to keep it hot for better temperature stability. This stability is crucial to the ability of the espresso artist in producing consistently repeatable shots. As we move up through this range of machines other enhancements start to appear under the hood. Now these vary from machine to machine, but in general we find nicer housings or more robust materials inside and more powerful steaming.

Breville Dual Boiler Espresso MachineLast on our list are dual boiler prosumer machines. These machines employ dedicated boilers for brewing and steaming. They include features allowing the espresso artist to truly perfect their craft with the ability to produce quality espresso repeatedly. Features like PID temperature control allow users to set and maintain extremely accurate brewing temperatures. Many in this category are plumbable to water supplies and drain. You’ll find high quality pumps with adjustable pressures. Components used in these machines are the best. Designed for consistent performance and durability. Bigger valves, better gauges and features ranging from no-burn steam wands to the ability turn off the steam boiler.

Gaggia Baby Twin Espresso MachineSo that’s a basic overview of the capabilities and features of semi-automatic espresso machines. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for an easy to use, low cost machine, a machine that can grow along with your experience or one that will allow you to perfect your skill, there’s a machine to fit your needs. Use the filter on the amazon to generate side by side comparisons of the features of our semi-automatic machines. Yeah, it’s a great resource. We can find that the customer does extensive testing on every machine it sells. You’ll find extremely detailed data to help you make an informed purchase decision. A True Classic-Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine Review

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso MachineToday we are here to take a look at the Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine, which is designed in Italy by Gaggia. Combining a classic design with the advanced technology, Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine designed a classic. Some of the nice features that this machine does have to offer are that it has a three way solenoid valve. It’s going to help dry out the puck and relieve the pressure of the system after you’re done brewing. Besides, it uses the standard 58 millimeter, the commercial style portafilters, the same portafilter diameter that you can see on commercial machines.

Gaggia 14101 Classic Product Details

  • Product Size: 25 x 13 x 12 inches ; 20 pounds

  • Water Reservoir: 72-ounce removable water reservoir for easy filling or cleaning

  • Material Quality: Stainless-steel housing

Another nice thing I will show you is that the steam wand is actually on a ball joint. So it gives you a lot of motion and it gives you the ability to fit a larger or smaller steaming pitcher underneath it.

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso MachineThe Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine is a great looking machine! You can find the glossed black side panels on the sides and you actually have the chrome accent piece which really makes your buttons pop out on the front. There are two buttons on this machine,  the brew button and the steam button, then you actually have two backlit lights that are going to let you know that the machine is on and that you are up to temperature.

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso MachineNow, the nice thing about this is the steam wand is actually on a ball joint so it gives you vertical motion which is nice, not a lot of machines have that out there. What that comes in handy for is when you have to put a steaming pitcher underneath it, it gives you the most range of motion so you can get that really good frothed milk that we’re all looking for. With this machine, it uses standard 58 millimeter commercial sized portafilter, chrome plated brass allows for very good heat stability. And just I mean, again with the looks, it looks really good, the stainless steel drip tray with the float in it lets you know when the water is full, and the nice thing too about the New Baby is it does have a three way solenoid valve so this is going to help dry out the puck and relieve the pressure off the machine after you’re done brewing. Now we’ll actually spin the machine around and show you the back of it.

Also you can have the machine turned around, and you’re going to notice the large water reservoir, very easy to fill. You can pour it from behind with a pitcher, and there’s actually a handle that pops up and you can take it over to the faucet so that makes it very handy for filling. And then also you’ll see on the back of the machine you have your main power button and where the cord plugs into it. So, a great little machine and it does a great job of putting out some quality espresso.

Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine Review

Last week, I received an email from my old friend ask me something about the best espresso machine. He told me that he wants to buy a coffee machine, but he’s a little bit confused that which one to decide, either delonghi or gaggia? When choosing an espresso machine, it is more important to know what is important to you. Both the Delonghi and the Gaggia are great machines. With the Gaggia, you will have more control over your shots. You will be able to change the grind setting along with the tamp pressure which will change up the shot quality. Of course, you can also get some reviews about Delonghi Espresso Machine here.

Actually, if you have read my latest espresso machine reviews about Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine, you must be deeply attracted by that coffeemaker. Now we’re here still with the Gaggia Classic. And I remember that the Money Magazine just recently named this machine the top home espresso machine to get that makes the perfect espresso.

“Consumers Best Buy! Very good, housing, stainless steel, very heavy duty.” As they said.

But I think the reason why it’s one of the best sellers is three key components, and it’s going to be, temperature stability, water distribution, and brew pressure. On the front of the machine, you have three switches which are very simple to operate. You have a main power switch, a steam switch and a brew switch. The brew switch operates the pump, and turns it on or off to start or stop the brewing process. On the right side of the Gaggia Classic, there is the steam knob. The steam knob controls the hot water or the steam that comes through the steam wand. At the same time, you will notice that’s got good height of the counter so you can fit a good sized pitcher underneath. And the drip tray is accessible from the front of the machine, which can be removed, taken over to the sink, and drained out and then replaced back. And then we have our water reservoir. Water reservoir can be filled from the top of the machine, and it has space for 72 ounces of liquid, and also can be removed from the front of the machine if you need to. Just so easy to use, the Gaggia Classic turns anyone into a Barista in our own home.

OK, if you are more interested in this great machine. Maybe you want to know more about the internals of this machine, I can represent it to you. First, the brew group, which is fitted up inside of the machine and the portafilter there locks into it. Both are chrome plated brass. Commercial sized and commercial weight. So what you get here is a large diameter that you have a large surface area of the coffee that’s exposed to the water.

Usually, there is a brass piece controls the actual brew pressure. So we can have pumps in there and it can create somewhere between 15 to 17 bar of pressure, but these actually regulate the brew pressure down to 9 bar. Of course, it will brew at the same pressure as a commercial machine. There are two very high wattage heating elements in the boiler, both imbedded into the aluminum on the boiler. It heats up very quickly to brew temperature and to steam temperature. Also in there we have they call a three way solenoid valve. What it does is released the water pressure off the coffee and puts it into the drip tray when you’re done brewing so that you have a nice dry coffee puck that you can knock out of the portafilter. It’s a positive closing valve so that you don’t get water leaking through the brew group. It’s also very easy to clean as many reviewers said.

What’s more, a couple of accessories with your machine ars going to come with. You’re going to get three filter baskets. One for a single shot, one for a double shot, and one that’s able to

do pods so any ESE or easy serving espresso can be placed into the third basket. The grinder of this machine is the Gaggia MDF. This is a dosing grinder, very similar to what you’ll find in the commercial espresso shots. You pull the handle and it dispenses the coffee. Now one of the good things about the Gaggia Classic is that it only takes about five minutes for it to heat up and then to get to the steaming function is only about twenty seconds. This machine is the best selling espresso machine on Amazon now. Many customer purchase it which prove it’s a real classic and worthy machine.

Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine Review

How to Steam Milk with an Espresso Machine

In this post, I’ll teach you some basic coffee-making skills. I’m going to tell you how to steam milk with an espresso machine. The wonderful thing about espresso is that besides just a straight shot and an Americano, there’s a multitude of milk drinks you can make. But first, you have to know how to steam it right, which is a little bit tricky.

How to Steam Milk with an Espresso MachineMaybe your own machine has a steam wand like mine which is a knob that rotates, or other will have a button that you push, or a level that you pull. You want to start out with high quality whole milk that’s cold as well as a pitcher that’s also cold. After you get ready for all the things, there’re a few motions that you’ll go through when doing this.

The first is to submerge the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Start off with the pitcher straight up, and then angle it. This way when you turn it on you’ll create a whirlpool. The first thing you do when you turn it on is let a little bit of air in. However, you can only keep this for a few seconds. Otherwise you’ll end up scorching the milk. Once you’ve let the air in, you will sink the tip of the wand in and just let it whirlpool until it gets the correct temperature.

How to Steam Milk with an Espresso MachineAlright, we can be able to steam this up till now. The first thing you always want to do is purge. There can be a buildup of milk or water in the tip and you don’t want that going into the milk. So again, we just let some air in. It’s going to make a slight hissing sound, and then we will make a whirlpool. Then again, always purge afterwards to get that milk out of there. So once you’ve steamed it, you can give it a couple knocks. You’ll see that there’re just a few bubbles in there. Next, swirl it around to incorporate all that foam you just made. You’ll see it’s nice and glossy. This is called micro foam. If you see too many spidery bubbles, that means you’ve either let too much air in, or not enough. After what you done, you will find that’s so perfect.
